MMC Materials®, Inc. — the leading supplier of concrete solutions throughout Mississippi, South Alabama, West Tennessee, and Eastern Louisiana — operates a fleet of 420 drivers and 450 trucks. With both long-haul and mixer drivers in daily operation, the fleet handles a variety of safety issues while maintaining a competitive concrete business.

The company had been working with another camera provider to monitor fleet safety and performance but encountered several issues before switching to Netradyne®. Today, MMC Materials leverages Netradyne’s Driver•i® AI-powered video safety solution to measurably improve safety and driver performance, cut time spent on training, and exonerate drivers in insurance disputes.

Greater Accuracy from High-Quality Video

MMC Materials uses Netradyne’s Driver•i intelligent dash cameras and D-HubX external camera connector throughout its fleet to reduce backing accidents and capture real-time events with speed and accuracy. Kyle Beckman, Director of Compliance and Innovation for MMC Materials, described how both drivers and stakeholders had lost trust in their former system as it could not be relied upon for accuracy.

“With Netradyne, we can trust the safety alerts,” he said. “We don’t have to watch every video to make sure that the alerts being generated are correct. The accuracy has been very high. We are able to take the data at face value whereas with our former provider, we would have had to watch every video to check for accuracy.”

Beckman’s team is also able to obtain this accurate footage in real time as opposed to only after events occur with their previous system. “Gaining access to all the footage necessary in 15 minutes or less,” according to Beckman, “allows our fleet to quickly resolve issues rather than addressing them after the fact.”

This newfound accuracy and video quality has enabled Beckman and his team to spend 50% less time reviewing footage and subsequently coaching drivers.

More Effective Coaching with Less Hands-On Help

The fleet leverages virtual coaching and managed coaching through the Driver•i system, reducing the time and manpower needed for one-on-one conversations with drivers about safety issues.

For MMC’s long-haul drivers, the fleet is now able to take a smarter approach to speeding. Their previous system simply accessed speed limits through a GPS database, but Netradyne’s AI vision reads speed limit signs, for the most up-to-date and accurate information. With ready mix drivers, the fleet is more concerned about distractions. Distracted driving has decreased by an estimated 77 percent since the company’s August 2023 onboarding as Driver•i in-cab alerts help drivers correct for distracted behavior in real time.

MMC drivers have the Driver•i app on either their cell phones or tablets, so they are able to self-coach and improve their GreenZone® Scores for positive recognition and incentives. Netradyne’s GreenZone is the industry’s first safety score considering both positive and risky driving behaviors to accurately reflect driver and fleet safety profiles.

“Not only are we able to cut down on review and coaching time by 50%,” said Beckman, “we are better able to identify issues and trends impacting safety.” The fleet is able to put coaching in the hands of the drivers through the virtual coaching capabilities, saving in-person training time for bigger needs.

“Since implementing the Driver•i app, we’ve received great feedback from drivers,” said Beckman. “They can log on, see their score, and watch videos. They can self-correct, sometimes for mistakes they truly believed they did not make. We’ve had some drivers completely eliminate issues and dramatically reduce speeding and distracted driving.”

MMC Materials has seen such improvement in driver performance — including seatbelt compliance, following distance, speeding, traffic light violation, and distracted driving — that the fleet has raised its own benchmark for high performance in Driver•i from a score of 850 to 875. The fleet has also achieved an estimated 78 percent decrease in speeding.

The fleet expects to see even greater improvement after the first quarter of its new company-wide incentive program, where drivers receive a monetary incentive for improved GreenZone Scores[TH1] .

Reduced Insurance Disputes and Better Reporting

Overall, Beckman’s job is easier with Driver•i. “I can get a holistic view of my fleet. I can see what each area is doing and where we may be having issues, and I get accurate, valuable reports,” he said.

A group statistics report breaks down numbers for each of his operational areas, an executive summary report shows driver behavior trends, and a driver statistics report serves as the framework for the fleet’s incentive program. The reports give Beckman the ability to see where they might need additional coaching, where gaps in performance may lie, and where to focus certain efforts.

The fleet has also benefited from eliminating frivolous insurance claims. “The video quality has helped us with insurance claims in that we’re able to show law enforcement right then and there what happened. When we’re involved in an accident, we’ve been able to pull that video for the police or sheriff to show what actually occurred and prevent us from having to proceed to the insurance stage,” said Beckman.

“Netradyne has allowed us to continuously improve. Since onboarding, we’ve been able to identify and correct driving behaviors to improve overall fleet safety.” - Kyle Beckman, Director of Compliance and Innovation, MMC Materials.
